Verizon schedules interrupted service

Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango to face outages for equipment installation
A communications tower on the campus of Fort Lewis College. Verizon Wireless is planning outages Tuesday through Thursday in parts of Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio to upgrade equipment.

Verizon Wireless service will be interrupted for customers in La Plata County next week while the telecommunications provider adds XLTE equipment to increase the network’s data capacity.

Service in Bayfield will be unavailable from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday. Service in Ignacio will be unavailable from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Service in Durango will be degraded between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Because there is overlapping coverage in and around the city, some customers may not see an impact. Service along U.S. highways 160 and 550 in and around city limits may also experience inconsistency in the network.

The additions will double the company’s data capacity.

XLTE delivers a minimum of double the bandwidth to 4G LTE customers in areas with high traffic. 4G service came to the Durango area in 2013 and covers Fort Lewis College as well as the area from Haviland Lake south to County Road 217, west along U.S. Highway 160 to Wildcat Canyon Road and east along U.S. Highway 160 to Bayfield.
