Nighttime run was creative and fun

I would like to applaud the out-of-the-box thinking of the Durango High School cross country team, the city of Durango and Hillcrest Golf Club for putting on a very creative athletic event on Sept. 11.

A group of dedicated volunteers, coaches and parents put on a nighttime cross country meet at Hillcrest Golf Course. With the help a few strategically placed lights and hundreds of glow sticks, the athletes were able to navigate the course and have a unique running experience.

In the event’s first year, Durango hosted 32 middle school and high school teams as well as a citizens’ race. There were more than 500 runners (including 40 citizens).

This is a great new venue for Durango High School cross country’s home meet. Hillcrest Golf Club is set on a scenic mesa that lets athletes and spectator enjoy a beautiful sunset. The venue’s proximity to Fort Lewis College provided plenty of parking for school buses. The carnival-like atmosphere at the start/finish was enjoyed by the athletes. With continued cooperation from all parties, this event will just get better. I hope that this unique running event becomes a Durango tradition. It was a magical night, watching those athletes compete under the stars.
