Best of Durango was anything but

As I was reading the Sept. 26 Herald, I thought that “Moose visits the Animas” deserved first place: nice piece of local color. Second place: “Questions arise over contractor selection.” A little national coverage in our little local newspaper adds interest. It is good to be up to date on the EPA and the continued finger-pointing, confirming that we still are not certain who to blame.

And now, we are left with honorable mention. Could it be: 2015 Best of Durango & La Plata County, presented by The Durango Herald? Perhaps not. What a waste of paper! What was the purpose of this limited, sophomoric and divisive piece of fluff? Was there some form of standardized polling? Or did The Durango Herald just ask people to email or send in their votes for their favorites and/or friends?

I find this marketing attempt to be offensive as well as condescending. It may as well have been some junior high school popularity contest. Although many of the businesses mentioned are indeed businesses that provide high-quality services; there are still many more that were not mentioned and this publication, by inference, implies that they are not as good as those mentioned in the fabulous 2015 Best of Durango & La Plata County presented by The Durango Herald. There are even a name or two mentioned that I would not have even considered for an honorable mention.

Please do us all a favor and try to stick to some form of journalism. And leave the advertising to the individuals who wish to do so by placing their ads where they think best.
