Bayfield cross country led by Fleming, Mazur at Chicken Creek Challenge

The Bayfield High School cross country team traveled to Mancos for the Chicken Creek Challenge on Saturday.

Bayfield senior Lexa Fleming was the top runner for the girls’ side, as she came in 12th with a time of 24 minutes, 3 seconds. Sophomore Sloan Mazur was the top runner for the boys’ side by finishing 15th with a time of 19:57.

“We’ve been training really hard the past several weeks,” Bayfield head coach Josh Walton said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

The remaining Bayfield boys’ played out with Bryan Gram finishing 28th with a time of 20:57; Joey Sandrey finished 36th with a time of 21:59; Brandon Stuever finished 42nd with a time of 22:12; Justis Herrera finished 52nd with a time of 23:53 and Jackson Sibley finished 53rd with a time of 24:13.

Top female runner Bridgett Goddard didn’t finish the race because of a cramped calf muscle. According to Walton, Goddard ran the first mile, but cramped up and couldn’t finish.

The remaining Bayfield girls’ were Rachel Cooper, who finished behind Fleming to take 16th in the girls’ race with a time of 24:49. Brittany Birk finished 38th with a time of 29:46; Sarah Ruybal finished 39th with a time of 30:26; Jade Sanders finished 41st with a time of 35:17 and Mylee Sanders finished 44th with a time of 48:40.

Ro Paschal of Mancos High School took first overall for the boys’ side with a time of 17:33, and on the girls’ side it was McKinzey Allee of Farmington High School, who came in first with a time of 21:34.

Bayfield finished eighth in the race with 115 points, and Mancos High School took first with 26 points.

The Chicken Creek Challenge is an elite course that runs through national forest. According to Walton, the Bayfield runners had fun running through hills on such a tough course.
