Durango boys soccer returns home with win

Durango returns to Riverview with a big victory

After being on the road the past four games, the Durango High School boys soccer team certainly felt at home Saturday at the Riverview Sports Complex by defeating Aztec 5-2 on a perfect sunny day.

Durango (7-3-1, 2-1-1 4A/5A Southwestern League) is now in third place in its league, and Aztec (9-6) is currently in second place in the Class 5A District 1 League in New Mexico.

DHS junior Luke Stetler was the man of the match by totaling two goals and an assist for the Demons. Stetler started things off quite nicely by scoring the first two goals of the game; the first came by way of sophomore Elijah Fenton’s assist, while the second goal came from junior Sam Dekay.

Durango improved to 3-0 at home and is 3-1-1 in its last five games.

“I love winning at home. Home games are my favorite because we get all of the home fans,” said Stetler, son of Anne and Mark Stetler. Stetler now has seven goals, three assists and 17 points through the year. Fenton leads the Demons with nine goals, 10 assists and 28 points.

The third goal saw a combo play from one brother to the next, as Luke Stetler found his older brother and senior Mason Stetler. Junior Blake McClain added the fourth goal on a penalty kick.

DHS sophomore goalkeeper Trey Furnas recorded one save and scored the win to improve his record to 5-2-1.

The Demons outshot the Tigers 10-4 and had seven corner kicks while the Tigers had two. So far this year, the Demons have scored 45 goals while averaging 4.5 goals per game.

“It’s always good to start our five-game home stretch with a win,” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said. “It comes down to finishing. You have to put the ball in the back of the net, and the boys are getting better about it. They’re starting to finish more, but I would like to see them continue to get better as they go on.”

DHS sophomore Saylor Longfellow scored the fifth and final goal for Durango in the second half. The score was unassisted and came on a rebound score from a corner kick.

Aztec was playing a high line all game, and Durango combated that by playing more direct. Durango played a 4-3-3 formation all game with high pressure.

Aztec’s goals came from senior Zakk Kimble on a penalty kick and Ruben Teasyatwho, who scored on a header from a corner kick.

The defending league-champion Demons are at home for the rest of the year with the next four games squaring off against Grand Junction, Grand Junction Central, Montrose and Fruita Monument. Durango’s last loss was on the road and came at the hands of Montrose, which is currently in first place in league standings. According to Parker, the league is wide open and, if the Demons win out, they’ll take the crown once more.
