Steamworks Half nearing cap

Runners take off at the start of the 2014 Steamworks Half Marathon on East Animas Road (County Road 250).

If you’re wanting to join in on the always-popular Steamworks Half Marathon, best not to delay.

Registration opened Sunday for this year’s June 13 run, and the race cap of 300 is rapidly being approached, director Matthew Krichman said Thursday.

“We hit 200 on the first day,” Krichman said. “I would guess we’re looking at about 10 days. Could be two days for all I know. ... Every year it gets a little bit tougher.”

In 2014 the run sold out in 16 or 17 days, he said.

The 13.1-mile run begins at Bakers Bridge and ends at the Durango Sports Club.

And if you miss out on that one, you can still try for the Thirsty 13 Half Marathon, which takes place Aug. 29 this year. Registration begins April 1 (thirsty13durango.com).

The field was limited to 340 last year, said Krichman, who also directs the Thirsty 13, but he hopes to bump that up a bit for 2015.
