Trial date set for ATM holdup suspect

Former Fort Lewis athlete pleads not guilty to charges

A trial date is set for Oct. 15 for the former Fort Lewis College football player charged with armed robbery for allegedly attacking an ATM user at knifepoint on April 21 at the Bank of the San Juans in Durango.

Maurice Anderson, 30, stood before District Judge Jeffrey Wilson on Tuesday afternoon. Wilson approved all five charges pending against him: three counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of assault in the first degree – all Class 3 felonies.

Anderson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Anderson is accused of attacking an ATM user from behind with a knife around 5 p.m. at the bank’s downtown location at 144 E. Eighth St. He then allegedly stabbed the victim in the chin and stole the customer’s money, fleeing in a white Toyota Prius.

Durango Police spokesman Ray Shupe said the victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center to receive stitches, but the wound was minor and not life-threatening.

An ATM surveillance camera caught the suspect wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gloves, sunglasses and a scarf covering his face. Anderson was later arrested on May 22 at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio on suspicion of felony robbery and assault.

Anderson played wide receiver for the FLC Skyhawks in 2013 and 2014, and majored in exercise science. A native of Mobile, Alabama, he also played at Auburn University from 2003 to 2005.
