Young Bayfield team overpowers Pagosa Springs

Volleyball team takes down the Pagosa Pirates

The young Bayfield Wolverines volleyball team is beginning to come together like head coach Terene Foutz hoped they would.

Led by sophomores Ashley Mottin and Kylee McCoy, Bayfield (6-8, 2-1 Intermountain League) beat a good Pagosa Springs (12-5, 2-2 IML) team 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-13) Tuesday night.

Mottin and McCoy led the team with eight kills each. Emily Bauer had 12 digs, and Maddi Foutz had five of the team’s 15 aces to lead the Wolverines to victory.

“We ran a very balanced attack (Tuesday night) and everyone got in on the action,” Coach Foutz said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “This team is starting to understand how to play with each other and they’re learning to win. It’s been fun to watch, and I’m so excited to see them growing already.”

After losing the first game, which is something Bayfield has done all year, the Wolverines got loose and overpowered a Pagosa Springs team that has had a fine season.

Bayfield went on a 7-2 run in the second game that took the momentum and never gave it back.

They won the third game with ease and got out to a 9-0 lead in the fourth game and poured it on.

Bayfield will try to keep the momentum going in the next match at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Centauri
