New scam involving LPEA

It’s a new scam involving La Plata Electric Association, this time with a new twist.

Scammers call businesses to say their power will be cut if they don’t settle an outstanding debt.

This time around, the scammers say the bill must be paid at Rite Aid or City Market.

Only problem is that neither of the businesses take LPEA payments.

LPEA doesn’t collect past-due bills through third parties, said agency spokeswoman Indiana Reed. Recipients of fraudulent calls should notify local law enforcement agencies, she said.

If customers have a question about billing, they may call LPEA at 247-5786, Reed said.
