Yes on Bayfield question 2D

The town of Bayfield is proposing a 1 percent increase in sales tax for 20 years to fund road maintenance and improvement as well as other transportation needs. The investment is a needed one, and reflects effective long-range planning on Bayfield’s part. Voters should approve the narrowly defined and time-limited tax increase.

Ballot question 2D would raise approximately $295,000 annually for 20 years to be placed in a street fund that would pay for what the town estimates to be a $200,000 to $2 million annual deficit for maintenance – starting in 2021. By investing in the fund now, Bayfield residents can avert an infrastructure crisis and allow the town to plan adequately for future needs, tiered to growth and development in the community. Further, the sales taxing mechanism disperses the cost of street improvements across residents and visitors; an alternative property tax proposal would place the burden solely on home and property owners in the town.

Bayfield is looking down the road to its impending street and transportation needs and is planning accordingly. Voters should invest in the town’s future by committing to maintaining and updating roads through a 1 percent sales tax increase. Vote yes on Bayfield ballot question 2D.
