Donations to Hospice of Montezuma tax deductible

Cortez mayor Karen Sheek, Dolores mayor Val Truelsen and Mancos mayor Rachel Simbeck gathered with the Hospice volunteers to sign a proclamation declaring November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.

Hospice of Montezuma was approved as an “Enterprise Zone Contribution Project” by the Colorado Economic Development Commission, or EDC, according to a Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado news release.

The designation allows all donor contributions above $250 or more for this project to be eligible for a 25 percent state tax credit on cash donations, and a 12.5 percent state tax credit on in-kind donations.

Hospice of Montezuma was approved as a contribution project because it provides needed rural health care services – specifically hospice and home care – utilizing nurses, physicians, social workers, counselors, clergy, and volunteers to allow residents to stay in their homes, Region 9 said.

In 1986, the Colorado Legislature approved the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit program to assist economically distressed areas of the state.

In Southwest Colorado, all of Montezuma, Archuleta, San Juan, and Dolores counties are designated Enterprise Zone areas. La Plata County has some areas that are not considered distressed, and thus not included, Region 9 said.

There are 31 projects designated in Southwest Colorado.

A list of eligible projects and program information is available online at www.scan.org or by calling Region 9 at 247-9621.
