Solid first day for a few Fort Lewis golfers

Thulson 12th at RMAC No. 2 tournament

After a round and half at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference South Invitational at Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club in Sandia Park, New Mexico, two Skyhawks are in the top 15.

In what was a long day at Paa-ko Ridge, the second round was suspended because of darkness midway through the 36-hole marathon. Fort Lewis College freshman Matt Huntley’s opening round, even-par 72 put him in a tie for second place. Through 10 holes of Monday’s second round, Huntley sits at 4 over and fell back into a tie for seventh.

Senior Dillon Washburn was also striking it well for the Skyhawks in New Mexico. When play was stopped, Washburn had played 11 holes of his second round at 3 over. At 7 over for the day, Washburn is tied for 13th.

The rest of the Skyhawks didn’t fare too well. Michael Thomas and Mitch Donley are both 13 over, tied for 51st. Ryan Tanner is tied for 66th at 21 over. As a team, Fort Lewis is in 11th place with a total of 315. The Skyhawks are 16 strokes behind a Regis team that had a school record 6-under 66 posted in the opening round by tournament leader Matt Robertson.

In the RMAC South No. 2 event for Fort Lewis’ women’s team, Jessica Thulson’s 7-over 79 was tops for the Skyhawks. With two birdies, seven bogeys and a double-bogey, Thulson is tied for 12th halfway through competition.

As a team, Fort Lewis is in 13th place with a total of 364 and needs to make up a lot of ground. They are currently 62 strokes off the tournament leading Midwestern State squad.

Isabella Martinez (85), Brook Schultz (98), Judith Camacho (100), Lindsey Blyth (102) and Lauren Trujillo (105) rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawks.
