El Diablo staff sporting halos

They took on the largest schools in the state and came out shining.

Durango High School seniors Elli Earl, Sydney Mattox, Katie Milliet and Audrey Morris, all editors of the school’s El Diablo newspaper, had a highly successful trip to the State Journalism Conference in Fort Collins last week.

After receiving top critiques in five out of six categories for the 2014-15 issues, El Diablo was honored as an All-Colorado News Publication. And last but not least, the students were recognized for having traveled the farthest to attend, and the editors received third place in Best of Show for their edition that was printed the same morning they headed up to the Front Range.

Their winning front-page centerpiece? “Animas River: Green to yellow, then read all over.”

DHS English teacher and adviser Daniel Riecks said the young women started their journalism training under longtime advisor Barbara McLachlan, who retired in 2013, leaving behind a “legacy of excellence.”
