A sophomore at Fort Lewis College has died from complications resulting from excessive alcohol consumption, said La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith.

Mani Ericksen, 20, was found in medical distress about 2:30 a.m. Saturday by friends in her off-campus apartment in the east 500 block of First Street in Durango, according to the coroner, police and Mitch Davis, spokesman with FLC.

Ericksen was unconscious and had no pulse, said Brad Roach, investigator with the Durango Police Department. The woman’s friends began CPR until police and medics arrived and took over, he said.

They were able to obtain a pulse, he said.

She was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital in the Denver area. She was pronounced dead about 11:35 a.m. Monday.

She suffered swelling of the brain, which led to a cardiac arrest, Smith said.

Ericksen had a blood-alcohol level of 0.38 when she was admitted to Mercy, Smith said.

That is almost five times the legal driving limit of 0.08 in Colorado.

Police said they believe she had been drinking at several friends’ houses leading up to the incident. No foul play is suspected.

Ericksen graduated from Littleton High School in 2013, according to her Facebook page.

She hadn’t yet declared a major, but she had a particular interest in anthropology, according to an email sent Tuesday by FLC to students, faculty and staff members.
