November has a cornucopia of events at FLC

Blaylock

November arts offerings at Fort Lewis College include a Trio Solis, the famous Horowitz piano, Cajun music, humor, Suzy Boggus, art gallery openings and more. Truly a fall inspired cornucopia of events!

The Music Department’s first installment in Roshong recital hall is Trio Solis on Nov. 9. “Impassioned, totally committed playing” (Audiophile Audition) describes performances by Trio Solis (“of the sun”). Already distinguished as soloists, these energetic performers have embarked on a journey together to explore the piano trio repertoire with a unique synergy of brilliant technique, probing musicianship and a breadth of experience.

They’ll treat you to a fine performance featuring Mendelssohn’s Trio No. 2 in C Minor and pieces by two lesser known composers: Carter Pann’s “Nicky’s Trio” written in celebration of the birth of Pann’s first nephew, with movements titled “Cowboys”,” American Child”, “Mobile”, and The Little Devil”, and Paul Schoenfield’s “Café Music”. With jazz and blues influences, as well as light classical, gypsy, Viennese and Broadway styles, Café Music accomplished Schoenfield’s intention to write a piece suitable as high-class dinner music, which might also find a home on the concert stage.

Kerry Ginger’s vocal studio perform Musical Theatre and Artsong will be Nov. 10.

Our annual Honor Choir, featuring FLC choirs and high school students from around the area, will perform on Nov. 12, followed on Nov. 16 by a large group of middle and high school students for our annual Honors String Orchestra.

We were fortunate to snag a visit of the touring Horowitz piano. Lisa Campi Walters will give a lecture recital and performs on Horowitz’s piano on Nov. 19. The Art department continues Patricia Singer’s unre(Solved) through Nov. 16, followed by senior art and design major student exhibitions Dec. 2, with an opening reception at 4:30 p.m..

The Concert Hall month starts Nov. 7, with BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet creating potent and popular Cajun music. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the spirit of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swap pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass.

I hope you got your tickets for the Nov. 10 show with NPR humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris, who has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. This show is sold out.

Finishing the month is Suzy Bogguss on Nov. 20. Bogguss remains one of the rare artists who pleases fans and critics alike with her vocal style, musicianship and meaningful lyrics. One of the most acclaimed female country singers, she blends songs of substance and depth with mass-market appeal and balanced country tradition with a contemporary mainstream sensibility.

Purchase tickets for Concert Hall, Theatre Department and Music Department performances at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Ave., at www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.
