Ole Miss DL Nkemdiche will not play in Sugar Bowl

Mississippi defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche has played his last college football game.

The Rebels star, who was recently charged with marijuana possession after a 15-foot fall at an Atlanta hotel, will not play in the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma State on Jan. 1. The school said he will enter the NFL draft as a junior.

The 6-foot-4, 296-pounder is a second-team All-American and a possible top-10 draft pick. He has 29 tackles, seven for losses, including three sacks. He also scored three touchdowns for Ole Miss, which used him at fullback at times.

Police say the 21-year-old Nkemdiche on Dec. 12 broke a hotel-room window, walked about 15 feet, climbed over a wall and fell about 15 feet. He was taken to a hospital, ending up with stitches in his back and leg and a swollen ankle.

A police report said a double-pane window was broken and the room was in “complete disarray.” The report also said there were “approximately seven rolled marijuana cigarettes” in plain sight that police linked to Nkemdiche.

Nkemdiche came to Ole Miss, where his older brother, linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche, also plays, as one of the top-rated recruits in the country and helped the Rebels beat Alabama two consecutive years and reach two major bowls.

Russian whistleblowers want to ban country’s athletes for Rio

The Russian couple whose exposure of doping in their country led to the ban of Russian athletes say they should remain suspended and excluded from the Rio Olympics next year.

VItaliy and Yuliya Stepanova spoke about widespread doping in Russian athletics to the German broadcaster ARD, leading to the suspension of the Russian federation.

In the latest interview Sunday, Vitaliy Steponov says it would “unfair to the athletes around the world” if the suspension is lifted and the Russians are allowed to compete in Rio.

He says “for decades, the Russians have broken the rules, knowingly, have lied to the IOC, to athletes from different parts of the world.”

The ARD says the couple now lives in hiding and is willing to give more evidence to the IOC.

Mayer out for season but thankful crash wasn’t worse

Olympic champion Matthias Mayer will miss the rest of the season after crashing in a World Cup downhill, although he says it could have been “much worse.”

The Austrian team said Sunday that Mayer’s injuries were worse than originally thought and that he broke two vertebrae in Saturday’s crash in Val Gardena.

After being brought to a hospital in Innsbruck, Mayer was operated on and had four vertebrae bolted together to aid the healing process. He’ll be hospitalized for at least 10 days.

Still, the impact could have been worse if Mayer’s landing had not been softened by a protective air bag vest he was wearing under his race suit.

Prevc edges out 16-year-old brother in ski jump win

World Cup leader Peter Prevc of Slovenia beat his 16-year-old brother Domen to win a ski jump large hill event Saturday.

A remarkable podium was completed by third-place Noriaki Kasai of Japan, who at age 43 is older than the brothers’ combined ages. Kasai took Olympic silver at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, five years before Domen Prevc was born.

Peter Prevc, a 23-year-old double medalist at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, leaped 139.5 and 134 meters to lead with 297.1 points.
