Durango High School band ends season on high note

Sophomores Mika Harrison, front, and Rexford Gwinn perform with the Durango High School Red Pride Marching Band at DHS in mid-October as the band prepares to go to its end-of-season competitions. Mika is the daughter of Michael Harrison and Melanie Davis, and Rexford is the son of Bill and Mary Gwinn.

The Durango High School Red Pride Marching Band ended its season by breaking a school record.

At the Western Slope Regional Qualifier in Grand Junction in mid-October, the band, which has grown from 20 to 80 members in the last three years under director Katharine Reed, placed second in its division, qualifying for state for the third consecutive year.

A week later, the band competed at the North West New Mexico Marching Band Festival in Bloomfield. The only band to receive a “Superior I” rating, the band also saw several members honored.

Sierra Trout and Matthew McLaughlin were named Outstanding Drum Majors 2015, and Triston Dye on tuba and Dennis Costello on horn were named Outstanding Soloists 2015.

And at state, the band placed eighth, raising its score from last year by seven points and setting a new school record.

The band’s boosters are currently raising $40,000 for new uniforms.
