Durango man charged with assault of child near Durango High

Childish games and bullying resulted in an assault charge Friday for a Durango man defending his grandson.

Robert Sauer, 63, was issued a municipal summons for assault after allegedly grabbing a 12-year-old and dragging him toward his vehicle Friday afternoon near Durango High School.

According to Durango Police, a 12-year-old and 14-year-old were “picking on” Sauer’s 12-year-old grandson and stole his skateboard and backpack. Police received the call at 3:40 p.m.

Police say Sauer’s grandson was able to recover his skateboard, but not his backpack, and alerted his grandfather, who lived nearby.

“(Sauer and his grandson) found the two kids as they were entering the Durango High School property, and Sauer confronted them,” said Sgt. Bobby Taylor.

Sauer allegedly grabbed the 12-year-old by “wrapping his arm around him from behind” and pulled him toward his vehicle to question him, Taylor said. The child was not injured.

The two juveniles were charged with theft.
