EPA extends comment period on cleanup

The Environmental Protection Agency, in response to citizen request, has extended the public comment period to Aug. 15 on its proposed plan of interim remedial actions for the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund area, located outside Silverton in San Juan County.

Members of the public are encouraged to submit comments about the proposed plan.

Vegetable farms offer free tours Saturday

Free tours of vegetable production farms will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at locations in Bayfield, Mancos and Cortez.

Beginning farmers and those interested are encouraged to attend, ask questions, learn tips and see growing practices firsthand.

Registration is required and includes lunch. Location details will be provided upon registration, and participants are responsible for their own transportation.

Tours are sponsored by Southwest Farm Fresh, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, Colorado Tourism Office, Guidestone Colorado, Landlink Colorado, Valley Roots Food Hub and Arkansas Valley Organic Growers.

Durango to spray noxious weeds

The city of Durango contracted with Horizon Environmental Services to conduct noxious weed abatement through Aug. 3 at open spaces and parks.

Locations include: Cundiff Park, 360 South Camino del Rio; the open space in the 200 block of Parker Avenue, in Bodo Industrial Park; the open space in the 800 block of East Eighth Avenue; and an area in the 1300 block of Camino del Rio. Follow-up spot spraying will continue through August at these areas.

Herbicides include Milestone, Prescott and Tordon. Horizon Environmental Services is licensed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, and weed control is tested and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Old Fort fundraiser auction ends Sunday

The Old Fort at Hesperus’ online fundraising auction, which raises money for Fort Lewis College student internships and farmer-training program costs, will end at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The auction offers various items, events and opportunities that can be purchased to raise funds for cultivation equipment, row cover, packing shed upgrades and other costs that exceed the organization’s operations budget.

Heart Safe to offer first-aid, CPR classes

Local nonprofit Heart Safe La Plata will offer basic first-aid and CPR trainings in August at Durango Fire and Rescue Station 1, 142 Sheppard Drive:

A basic first-aid class will be held at 3 p.m. and an adult CPR class will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

An adult, child and infant CPR class for health care providers will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 8.

Rotary Club to meet Tuesday at Strater

The Rotary Club of Durango will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

Brent Shoradt, executive director of San Juan Mountains Association, will speak to the club about the local nonprofit, which partners with San Juan National Forest and Bureau of Land Management Tres Rios Field Office to promote responsible care of natural and cultural resources through education and community outreach.

The meeting is free and open to all.
