Overcast skies, cold temperatures expected through Thanksgiving weekend

Catherine Milton walks her dog, Sam, on Wednesday in Durango. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service has a 20 percent chance of snow and rain on Thanksgiving, with snow possible Saturday and Sunday.

Entering the Thanksgiving weekend, Southwest Colorado residents should expect overcast skies and temperatures on the cold side, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold front passing through is expected to drop temperatures by 10 degrees Wednesday night, with highs around the low-to-mid 40s, and lows just below freezing through Sunday. “It’s not breezy yet, but winds will pick up Wednesday evening,” Weather Service meteorologist Julie Malingowski said.

Because the system coming through isn’t well-organized, it’s difficult to predict the chance of precipitation, she said. A possibility of snowfall exists, but the weather service isn’t expecting heavy accumulations.

“There could be some snow showers overnight, transitioning into rain during the day through Sunday,” she said.

The overcast skies won’t lift until Monday because of a low-pressure system sitting over the Great Basin, from Nevada to Utah. Malingowski said temperatures are likely to rebound in the middle of next week.
