Coats and blankets to benefit Durango Community Shelter, Southwest Safehouse

Organizers hope to collect 500 items
Office Manager Jenna Bothner, left, and receptionist Marissa Talamante of Advantage Physical Therapy & Wellness on north Main Avenue examine blankets donated during the 10th annual Advantage Blanket and Coat Drive to benefit the Durango Community Shelter and Southwest Safehouse. The drive runs through Dec. 31. Hats, gloves and scarves are also being accepted.

Advantage Physical Therapy is collecting blankets and coats from now until the end of December for the Durango Community Shelter and Southwest Safehouse as temperatures turn cold this winter.

With donations being accepted at 3600 Main Ave., Suite A, in Durango, organizers are hoping to collect at least 500 blankets and coats in the center’s 10th annual drive.

“With the dropping temperatures and the high levels of expected snow this year, they are in desperate need of coats and blankets,” said Zach Graveson, marketing manager at Advantage Physical Therapy and drive organizer.

Rachel Bauske, project manager at Durango Community Shelter, said the drive sustains the center’s ability to offer warm clothing for everyone staying there.

“This drive has been going on for many years now, and we really do rely on the support of it,” she said.

“In fact, just a month ago, we had distributed almost all of our winter clothing, so this drive is a tremendous help.”

This year’s drive offers an added incentive to contribute. Those who donate are immediately entered to win a choice of either a 60-minute massage or a pair of custom orthotics.
