STATE CHAMPIONS

Nineteen years after the first state football championship in school history, the Bayfield Wolverines claimed another Saturday in Kersey with a 28-20 victory against Platte Valley. A class of 13 seniors delivered the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 2A State Football Championship in dominant fashion, finishing the season unbeaten at 12-0. Senior quarterback Kelton McCoy rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to Wyatt Freier in the win. Senior Zane Phelps rushed for more than 100 yards and added a touchdown to solidify the win. It is only the fourth state championship in school history in any sport, joining the 1991 girls track and field team, the 1996 football team and the 2005 boys cross country team.
