Bus crash a time for thanks, forgiveness

My fourth-grade son, Zak was in the bus accident. By far this was the scariest few hours of my life. A lot of speculation and negative comments have been flying around about the bus driver, but I feel differently. I believe it is School District 9-R’s top priority to keep our children safe, and this was an accident, no more, no less. It could happen to anyone of us at any time. My father-in-law was killed in a vehicle accident in the blink of an eye.

Granted, this accident was a doozy – but none of our children were paralyzed, permanently damaged or killed. I think we should all be on our knees thanking Almighty God that they are all alive and OK. I also think that we should show forgiveness and compassion to the bus driver, whom I’m sure feels terrible.

Thank you to Durango Fire and Rescue, Durango Police, 9-R and Mercy Medical for making sure that my son and all the other children were well taken care of and got safely reunited with their parents.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Susannah Standal
