Roads reopen after Sunday night snowfall in Durango

Police report six weather-related crashes

North College Drive in Durango reopened around 11 p.m. Sunday after a light nighttime snowfall temporarily closed the roadway.

The slick conditions hindered cars from reaching the top of the hill on North College.

“We had four plows out all night scattering sand,” Durango Street Superintendent Mike Somsen said. “There were no other problem areas.”

Durango Police Department reported six traffic accidents between 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, primarily in the 800 block of South Camino del Rio, North College Drive, Florida Road and East Third Avenue.

One accident involved minor, non-life-threatening injuries; the rest were fender benders, Sgt. Rita Warfield said.

Durango received only a trace of snow Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service, but the precipitation still caused problems for late-night and early morning drivers.

Law enforcement was trying to clear traffic off Farmington Hill around 11 p.m. Sunday due to slick conditions, according to the emergency scanner.

An accident on U.S. Highway 550 at mile marker 15, five miles south of Durango, closed the highway at 11 p.m. Sunday. The road was open in both directions around 11:50 p.m. Monday, Colorado Department of Transportation officials reported.

The high in Durango on Monday is expected to reach 32 degrees with a low of six degrees.

“The rest of the day looks pretty benign,” NWS meteorologist Julie Malingowski said. “The low pressure over the area is finally exiting the region, so the southern valleys are really out of precipitation at this point. Conditions should remain clear now.”
