Durango finishes 8th at Panther Invitational in Delta

It was a mixed bag of results over the weekend for Durango High School’s wrestling team. Friday’s dual match with Delta didn’t have the best results for the Demons. Delta won every match but two in a 64-10 victory for the Panthers.

Durango’s Devon Pound left the mat victorious against Delta’s Ayden Tucker in the 120-pound weight class. Pound’s 10-0 major decision win earned his team four points and it was the only non-forfeited match the Demons won.

In the 126-pound weight class, Tristan Martinez earned six points by forfeit and that was it for the Demons who were forced to forfeit three matches themselves. In Saturday’s 12-team Panther Invitational in Delta, Durango came in eighth with 58 points.

Martinez finished 3-1 and produced a team high 20 points for Durango. Martinez made it all the way to the championship match of the 126-pound weight class.

“It was Tristan’s first try at 126, and he looked great,” said Demons head coach Leo Garand. “He opened the meet with a pin and was very strong in the championship match.”

In the final match, Martinez came up on the short end of a 12-9 decision to Hotchkiss’ undefeated Colton Hall. The second place finish for Martinez was the best showing for the Demons.

In the 170-pound weight class, Cole Gustavson finished 4-1. He lost in the semifinals to Rifle’s Drake Montgomery, but came back with a vengeance.

“Cole had another great showing and he’s going to move down in weight to 160,” Garand said. “He’s 14-2 at 170 so that’ll be a huge advantage for him.”

Austin Counts also made it to the third-place match, but lost a tightly contested 6-5 decision. Garand was also impressed with the effort of freshman Paul Smagacz and sophomore Manasseh Brockus.

“We’ll be seeing those two oin the podium before long,” he said.”

The Demons will be back on the mat Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction for the Warrior Invitational.
