A musical offering from Taos to Durango

Violinist Rathnam returns to town for chamber program
Violinist Odin Rathnam highlights an evening of chamber music, 7 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

When violinist Odin Rathnam last played Durango, he cast a spell over the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. Rathnam worked the magic of composer Max Bruch’s first violin concerto with conductor Arthur Post and the San Juan Symphony. To quote my own review from October 2013: “Rathnam played with lyrical sweetness, vigor and virtuosity.” Yes, he dazzled the audience, and he’s coming back with an evening of chamber music.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Rathnam returns to Durango for a concert at Christ the King Lutheran Church. He’ll be making music with his colleagues from Taos Soundscapes, cellist Rebecca Caron, pianist Claire Detels and guest cellist Katherine Jetter, Fort Lewis College music professor and principal cellist for our regional symphony.

The ensemble will play works by Bach, Beethoven, Gliere, and Johan Halvorsen’s imaginative adaptation of Handel’s “Suite No. 7 in G minor.” Originally composed for the harpsichord, the work has been transformed as a duo for violin and cello.

Rathnam made his Lincoln Center debut in 1993 and has appeared with orchestras around the world ever since. We were lucky to hear him in 2013. Now, he’s returning for an intimate performance of chamber music.

There are no tickets, but donations are suggested – $20 for adults and $10 for students. Christ the King Lutheran Church is at 95 Florida Road, and there’s plenty of parking.
