Animas High charter in Durango looks at building in Twin Buttes

Board’s decision dependent on development of infrastructure

If the development schedule proceeds as presented, it looks like Animas High School will build its permanent home at Twin Buttes after all.

The public charter school’s board of directors met with the Twin Butte development team at its meeting Wednesday to get an update. AHS moved to its temporary home in modular units in the lower section of Twin Buttes in fall 2013 with the understanding the school would build in the development as soon as roads and utilities were installed.

The board, which was approached in the last year by Three Springs to consider moving there, has been left in limbo wondering what its future would be as Twin Buttes development stalled after the recession began. Meanwhile, time was ticking on the lifespan of the modular units, which have a planned obsolescence of five years. By the end of this school year in May, they will have two years left on the units.

“It’s pretty clear to you all that Twin Buttes went dormant,” new Twin Buttes Chief Operating Officer Bob Delves said. “We needed to do the significant restructuring necessary to strengthen ownership, the management team, the business plan and the financing.”

The Twin Buttes group has already installed some utilities and plans to pave the roads that have been cut and install sidewalks by mid-summer. The goal is to begin lot sales by the third quarter if possible, Delves said. Some of that is dependent on financing they have applied for through Alpine Bank.

“Thanks for coming to speak with us,” Board President Ann Laffaye said. “It gives us confidence that it’s for real. It had been a long time since anyone had come and spoken with us.”

Laffaye asked for frequent updates on progress.

“Particularly when you get your financing, so we can update our parents and students,” she said.

Delves liked the sound of that.

“We would love for you to update the parents,” he said with a smile. “We’re very interested in your parents.”
