Durango street without water after pipe break

Spruce Drive residents should expect water outage

A water main broke Wednesday in a neighborhood west of the intersection of Florida Road and North College Drive.

The broken pipe on Spruce Drive was discovered at 4 a.m. by a police officer, said Durango Utilities Director Steve Salka.

The frozen ground made it impossible for workers to uncover the pipe with any of the equipment the city owns, so staff was bringing in a large excavator around 2 p.m.

Low temperatures likely caused the ground to shift and break the pipe, Salka said.

Residents on Spruce Drive will likely have their water turned off for several hours Wednesday during repairs.

City staff hope to have repairs finished by the end of the day, Salka said.
