Fort Lewis College honors King with three days of activities

‘How can we live our lives in a way that honors Dr. King every day?’
Members of the Black Student Union and Fort Lewis College staff attend a meeting in December just before winter break and take the opportunity to express their goal: “End racism.” The group will host: “Black Lives Matter - One Movement/Many Topics” as part of Martin Luther King Day.

Martin Luther King Day on Monday will kick off three days of social justice activities at Fort Lewis College, which will offer everything from the longstanding tradition of a March for Solidarity to activism training through hip-hop, poetry, direct protesting, street art and mindful listening.

The activities are not focused just on race. They will include all kinds of social activism, such as environmentalism and poverty.

The number of Martin Luther King Day activities at the college has grown every year since 2013. Over the years, the day has included everything from film screenings to a “Tunnel of Oppression.”

During the past two years, as the national conversation on race and poverty has intensified, so have the activities.
