“I’m very pleased, all the boys wrestled hard,” Ignacio High School head coach Jordan Larsen said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “There were a lot of good battles, I thought we had some outstanding matches.”

Ethan Appenzellar was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight classes as he won the 138-pound weight class by going 3-0 with all pins. With the successful tournament, Appenzellar is still undefeated for the year.

At 113 pounds, Stocker Robbins went 4-0 with three pins. Robbins won in his final match via decision, 6-0. At 132 pounds, Tyler Beebe won his first tournament by going 4-0 with three pins.

At 160 pounds, Lorenzo Peña took first with two pins and one decision, which came by score of 6-1. With the win, Peña is still undefeated on the year.

Tim Plehinger took third place after going 2-1 on the day at 152 pounds. Dalton Mickey took fourth place after going 2-2. Michael Cruz went 2-2 with two pins and finished sixth in the heavyweight class. Other tough performances by Ignacio wrestlers came from Wyatt Mickas and Mark Kempinski.

“I’m looking forward to regionals at this point,” Larsen said. “With all the placings (Saturday), I couldn’t have asked much more from the boys. The boys are working hard in the practice room and it shows. I really looking forward to the next three weeks.”
