Ignacio wrestling pins its way past Durango

Bobcats’ wrestling outclasses a larger foe in Durango Demons

Durango may have tied Ignacio on the scoreboard, but there was no question which team performed the best on the wrestling mat Thursday.

Competing on their home mat, the Ignacio High School wrestling team claimed seven matches against the Durango High School Demons, but forfeits at four weight classes by the Bobcats helped the Class 4A Demons finish in a tie in team points with the Class 2A Bobcats at 48 points each. Three weight classes went uncontested.

The match of the night came at 160 pounds. Ignacio’s Lorenzo Peña went toe-to-toe with Durango’s Cole Gustavson in a match that took two overtime periods to decide. Gustavson used a late move to force overtime with the match tied at four points each after three two-minute periods. It was Peña who scored an escape point and avoided any Gustavson takedown attempt in the second overtime to secure a 5-4 win.

Durango’s lone win came at 170 pounds, as Nick Vasquez earned a pin 1 minute, 35 seconds into the second period against Ignacio’s Mark Kempinski.

Ignacio’s Stocker Robbins competed at 120 pounds Thursday and defeated Durango’s Devon Pound in a 9-2 decision.

At 132 pounds, Ignacio’s Tyler Beebe made quick work, pinning Durango’s Jordan Belt in 31 seconds.

Ignacio kept the win streak going at 138 pounds, as Ethan Appenzeller earned a pin at the 1:21 mark of the first period against Durango’s Ty Thorsheim.

Dalton Mickey backed that result up with a pin of his own against Durango’s Daniel Hamelmann. That pin came 1:33 into the second period.

Pins kept coming at 152 pounds for Ignacio, as Timmy Plehinger took down Durango’s Kaleb McMunn 33 seconds into the second period.

Ignacio currently is ranked No. 10 in the Colorado High School Activities Association/On The Mat Rankings.
