Big names, big bands highlight month at FLC

Here’s a rundown of what’s happening on the scene at Fort Lewis College in February:

Spend Valentine’s Day with the Red Shoe Trio. They’ll warm your heart with works from Spanish composers Gaspar Cassadó and Enrique Granados. Taking you outside the prescribed sonata format is Dvorak’s “Dumky Trio,” a collection of six Slavic folk-inspired movements varying widely in tempo and mood.

Dallas Symphony principal trumpet, Ryan Anthony, is the guest artist for our annual Brass Summit on Feb. 20 with a master class and Q&A.

Not to be missed is a free concert featuring the multi-talented United States Air Force Academy Winds Quintet on Feb. 25.

The following day the FLC Choirs will perform a concert of eclectic selections with the theme “Things We Can’t Hold,” featuring works by J. S. Bach, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Arthur Sullivan, Renee Clausen, Pablo Casals, and Jake Runestad. “Things we can’t hold” primarily refers to various forms of water, light and love. Concert, Chamber, Men’s, and Hawkappella choirs are sure to entertain with selections ranging from the Baroque period to the current pulse of popular music. The Chamber Choir will perform with our special guests, the FLC Chamber Orchestra.

The Concert Hall’s first two shows will have you on the dance floor; March Fourth! Marching Band Feb. 13 and Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra on the 18th. Part New Orleans brass ensemble, part groove-heavy rock group and part vaudevillian circus, March Fourth! unleashes such a Technicolor experience that using the word “concert” to describe the show fails to capture the full scope of the entertainers. A consummate and skilled bandleader, joined by syncopated Cuban rhythms, deep bass lines, jazzy horn arrangements and melodic piano or guitar, Adonis Puentes offers a joyous musical experience.

Terri Clark, one of the rare female country artists capable of wowing audiences with both her voice and her impressive guitar work, performs Feb. 23. Eight-time Canadian Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, and five-time Female Vocalist of the Year, Clark is the only Canadian female artist member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Six virtuoso guitarists from California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio perform arrangements of classical works and innovative takes on rock standards Feb. 27. These guitarists represent four countries and fuse more than 40 years of combined experience into one unique six-by-six-string “phenomensemble.” Imagine surf music next to psychedelic, classical next to Spaghetti Western themes, and Pink Floyd next to Bach; a delight for the music enthusiast.

Anna Hepler’s Site Unseen continues in the Art Gallery until the Feb. 19 and an opening reception at 4:30 p.m. on March 2 kicks of the 55th Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition.

Visit our arts websites for more information about venues, tickets, times, etc.
