Ignacio takes second place in San Juan Basin wrestling championships

Appenzeller undefeated but IHS falls to Norwood/Nucla

Ignacio High School’s wrestling team took second place in Thursday night’s San Juan Basin League Championship meet.

The Bobcats handled Dolores, Mancos and Dove Creek before losing in the league title dual to an experienced and always tough Norwood/Nucla program.

Ethan Appenzeller wrestled to a perfect 4-0 against some high quality opponents in the 138-pound division. Tyler Beebe, Dalton Mickey, Lorenzo Peña and Timothy Plehinger were 3-1 on the evening for Ignacio.

“Sometimes the coin doesn’t flip your way, but I’m happy with the level of wrestling our guys showed against guys who have won at the state level,” Ignacio head coach Jordan Larsen said. “Norwood is a savvy squad, and our guys stuck in there with them. We did an exercise after we finished up, and all the guys were ready to go at it again.”

Appenzeller came away with a win against a Norwood/Nucla state placer from last year. Beebe lost a very close match to a three-time state placer from Dove Creek, and Peña lost for only the third time this season in a match with the top 2A 160-pound wrestler in Trenton Armintrout.

All in all, the Bobcats seem to be in good form as they head down the stretch.

“I think our minds are right and we’re peaking just in time for regionals,” Larsen said. “We’re going to work hard next week and hopefully punch our tickets to the state meet.”
