Fort Lewis College women outlast South Dakota Mines in 75-69 2OT win

Yocky’s double-double leads dominant bench

Friday night’s game between South Dakota Mines and the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball teams needed two extra sessions to decide a winner.

In the end, the Skyhawks’ reserves were too much for the Hardrockers, and Fort Lewis won the battle of attrition 75-69 in double overtime. Alyssa Yocky came off the bench to lead Fort Lewis with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Dallas Dickerson also came off the bench to score 16 points in the win. Astrea Reed added 17 points. The Skyhawks’ bench outscored the opponents 41-13.

“We were up against a lot, and I’m proud of the girls for the way they fought until the end,” head coach Jason Flores said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We were on the bus for 16 hours, and we’re still pretty banged up. It was a good team win.”

Fort Lewis (13-8, 9-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had a chance to put the game away at the end of regulation but couldn’t get a shot up. At the end of the first overtime, Reed fired up a potential game-winner that sat on the rim for more than a second before falling harmlessly. The Skyhawks didn’t need the last possession in double overtime, as they scored 13 points in the five-minute frame to put away a game that they led for much of the contest.

The Skyhawks have had some trouble getting started in a few Friday games, but not this week.

FLC opened the first half in Rapid City with a 11-2 run, and it looked like it was going to be smooth sailing for the visitors. They couldn’t sustain the lead, however, as the Hardrockers (9-11, 6-10 RMAC) came all the way back and took a brief second-quarter lead until Fort Lewis closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 30-21 lead into halftime.

The start of the second half couldn’t have been more different than the first. The Skyhawks struggled to get anything going on offense and the Hardrockers slowly crept back into the game. The home team outscored FLC 16-9 in the third and cut the lead to three by the end of the quarter.

The teams exchanged buckets and stops down the stretch, and Fort Lewis couldn’t capitalize on its final possession. In the first overtime, S.D. Mines’ Megan Rohrer had a free throw to put her team up one with seconds left, but she missed and the game went to double overtime. Rohrer had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hardrockers.

“It was one of those games that was fun to coach and probably more fun to play in,” Flores said. “We don’t have much time to rest, but it’ll be nice to get off our feet for a few hours.”

Fort Lewis hopes to carry the winning momentum into a 4 p.m. Saturday game against Black Hills State.
