Bayfield boys get first league win over Centauri

Girls lose in same matchup

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team went on the road to get its first league victory when the Wolverines beat the Centauri Falcons, 76-45.

Bayfield (5-8, 1-3 3A Intermountain League) had 18 steals, 16 assists and only 12 turnovers to beat Centauri (3-11, 0-4).

“It was a quality ball game,” Bayfield head coach Jeff Lehnus said in a phone message with The Durango Herald. “The biggest thing is that we’re running the pass better and our defense is continuing to evolve. We are learning to play together and have an understanding of what we’re trying to do.”

Bayfield is now winners of its last 3-of-4 games.

“I think we’re starting to turn the corner,” Lehnus said. “We got out first league win on the road so that feels good.”

Bayfield is back in action as the Wolverines take on the Alamosa Mean Moose (11-4, 4-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Bayfield girls lost to Centauri 61-30 and will be in action against Alamosa at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be at Alamosa High School.
