Ignacio girls demolish Ridgway, 67-15

Bobcats pull off 52-point win

The Ignacio High School girls basketball team has put together an impressive run of beating opponents by an average of 41 points since losing to Durango High School on Jan. 19, and the Bobcats continued that trend Friday by beating the Ridgway Demons 67-15.

Ignacio (11-3, 7-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) started the game with a small lineup as Ellie Seibel and Miriam Fernandez-Lopez sat the first quarter for team discipline reasons while leading scorer Hilda Garcia missed the entire game because of personal reasons. No matter the lineup, because Ridgway (4-8, 2-4) couldn’t match up also down to only seven players.

The Ignacio 2-3 zone defense worked so well that the Bobcats forced 31 Ridgway turnovers and stole the ball 17 times.

“We wanted to work on our zone defense and be aggressive,” Ignacio head coach Shane Seibel said. “We wanted to force them to shoot long range. Our full-court trap worked really well.”

The Demons scored the majority of their points in the first quarter when they scored six points. For the rest of the game, the Bobcats held the Demons out of high-percentage shots.

“We’re starting to play together as a team. The defense is coming together and our shots are falling on offense,” said Avionne Gomez, daughter of Geneva and Kenneth Gomez. “On defense, we read their passes.”

Leading the Bobcats in scoring was Fernandez-Lopez, who finished with 14 points, 12 of which were a scored in the fourth quarter. Gomez had a good all-around night as she poured in 13 points and had three steals, three rebounds and two assists.

Sharing the ball was an emphasis for the Bobcats, as Ignacio amassed 19 assists. The Bobcats also did it on the boards by outrebounding the Demons 17-9. Ignacio also shot 8-for-15 from the free throw line.

“We are still in the process of coming together,” coach Seibel said. “Our bench had to step up against the opponent. We are stressing team first basketball.”

Gibran Silva added 10 points, and Alejandra Lujan had nine points, four assists and four steals. Ellie Seibel had seven points, for the Bobcats and Chrystainne Valdez added five assists.

The Ignacio girls are back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ignacio High School when the Bobcats welcome Ouray (6-6, 3-2) for another league game.
