Add comment option beyond Facebook

Public comment on issues affecting the community is essential. The Durango Herald’s approach to only allowing comments to online articles by those who have Facebook profiles is both discriminatory and misses a larger issue. There are residents in this community who do not have a Facebook profile, perhaps do not want a Facebook profile, and perhaps most important, even if they did have a Facebook profile perhaps would prefer not to connect to align two completely separate entities – feedback to a regional publication and a social media Goliath (with an overabundance of infusion in our lives, thank you).

Public comment through normal profiles (with all the regulatory checks and balances) exist at media outlets and papers throughout the United States without the added layer of a mandatory Facebook handcuffing. Commenting through Facebook should be an option but not the sole option. Please expand the options to the community.

Editor’s note: The Herald changed to the Facebook model to eliminate anonymous comments, which had been dominated by a few individuals and were too often tasteless – including incidents of racism and bullying. Facebook comments are becoming standard across online media.
