Durango High School girls swimming team breaks school records at districts

Glenwood Springs wins but DHS girls impress

The Durango High School girls on the 200 relay teams etched their places in the school record book over the weekend.

Elli Earl, Mira Joyner, Anne Mummery and Violet Witchel’s 200 freestyle relay time of 1 minute and 42.04 seconds wasn’t just for first place, it was faster than any Durango girls have ever finished in the event.

The same four went on to break another school record in the 200 Individual Medley with a second-place swim of 1:53.55 as the Demons took second place overall.

“We had a great weekend with so many phenomenal swims,” Demons head coach Tom Joyner said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “There were some personal best times and we placed in half the events. We had goals going in and we knocked them down one by one.”

Durango sent someone to the podium in six of the twelve events. The 200 relay teams weren’t the only relay teams with accomplishments over the weekend as the 400 free relay team of Christine Dellinger, Emily Doughty, Jocelyn Earl and Claire Larson racked up a state qualifying time.

Kylie Behn took second place in the one-meter dive with a total of 307.55.

Witchel took second in the 50 freestyle and Mummery’s 1:00.62 time in the 100 backstroke was also good for a second place finish. Mummery also took third in the 100 freestyle.

At this point in the season, Durango has a state qualifier in every event but diving.

“The versatility of this team is amazing,” said Joyner. “We have so many good swimmers and teams that are breaking records. I couldn’t be happier.”

Glenwood Springs won the meet with 471 points. Durango came in second with 374 and Aspen finished third with 340.
