KSUT Public Radio announced Wednesday that Southern Ute Tribal Radio Station Manager Sheila Nanaeto has been named interim executive director of KSUT-FM.

Her position is effective immediately as the board of directors searches for an executive director.

Nanaeto replaces Robert Franklin, who held that position for one year. He was hired in January 2015.

Neither the station nor human resources disclosed details of Franklin’s departure other than that his end date was Feb. 6.

Nanaeto joined KSUT, which broadcasts at 90.1-FM and 89.3-FM in Durango, in 2009 as the administration director interim and subsequently became the tribal radio director. She started at the station in 2000 as a volunteer DJ hosting the “Native Morning Show.”

In 2006, she became co-host of the Native American health program “Feeding the Spirit.”

“I love what I do in tribal radio, and I love on-air shifts,” Nanaeto said. “I enjoy being in the community and soliciting donations for music. Right now, my duties are just to keep the organization flowing and make sure we continue to provide good music, outreach and education.”

Nanaeto said she is not interested in permanently holding the executive director position.

“Sheila’s passion and commitment for the station, staff and its members is evident throughout her tenure with KSUT,” station board president Maria Baker said in a prepared statement.

KSUT, a 41-year-old station, provides news, entertainment and public information through Four Corners Public Radio and Southern Ute Tribal Radio.

KSUT signals can be picked up in La Plata County, Mancos, Cortez, Farmington, Pagosa Springs, Silverton and Dolores.

Southern Ute Tribal Radio is broadcast in Ignacio, Bayfield and northwest New Mexico.
