Childs, a Colorado author, to visit Durango in April

Craig Childs, a western Colorado author who writes about people, animals and the outdoors, will make two appearances April 11 in Durango:

Childs will present the keynote address at the annual La Plata Democrats Jefferson Jackson Dinner and Auction at 5:30 p.m. at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. Childs will speak on “The Source of All Waters: A River Journey to Tibet and Back.” Tickets are available at www.laplatadems.org.

Childs will read from and sign his latest book Apocalyptic Planet from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Rochester Hotel, 726 East Second Ave.

Parks and Wildlife offers a turkey-hunting workshop

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will offer a free workshop April 3-4 on how to hunt turkeys. It is geared toward women and men 18-30.

No experience or equipment is required. Class leaders will explain safety, rules and regulations, equipment needed, how to field dress a turkey and the strategies for hunting turkeys. Participants also will try out various calls.

An evening session April 3 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave., will focus on turkey biology and the basics of hunting the bird. An all-day hands-on session will take place April 4 at the old Fort Lewis campus near Hesperus. That session will feature shotgun skills, safety and shooting; turkey-hunting strategies, learning how and when to use turkey calls and other field skills.

Seniors Outdoors announce programs

Seniors Outdoors will offer these programs:

A hike on the Falls Creek Trail will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday. Hiking will be at a moderate pace, and the group may return on a ridge trail route. Dogs will be allowed. The cost to carpool is $1. To RSVP, call Nancy Federico at 259-1949 or email fortfed@gmail.com.

The Wednesday Wanderers will walk the Animas River Trail at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. No RSVP is required. For more information, call Eric Pahlke at 247-1130.

“Wandering in the De-Na-Zin Wilderness” will take place at 7:30 a.m. March 27. The group will wander in the De-Na-Zin Wilderness at a moderate pace. Much of the walking terrain will be flat and sandy, but some scrambling is required. Dogs are not allowed. The cost to carpool is $9. To RSVP, email Travis Ward at tlward@frontier.net.

Bassmasters compete Feb. 7 in New Mexico

The Southwest Colorado Bassmasters had their first fishing tournament of the year Feb. 7 at Morgan Lake in New Mexico.

The winning team of Steve Otten and Mark Faber had a five-fish limit weighing 10.31 pounds. The Southwest Colorado Bassmasters has monthly meetings and holds several bass tournaments a year. The next tournament will be Saturday at Morgan Lake.
