Fort Lewis College women walkover Western State 75-43.

Lampert’s double double leads 75-43 Fort Lewis win

The opening quarter has been feast or famine this season for the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team, and Friday’s effort was one of the best to date.

The Skyhawks (14-9, 10-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) raced out of the locker room and dominated a first quarter that deflated the opponents’ hopes in just minutes. Fort Lewis shot 66 percent from the field in the opening quarter and gave up only six points in the frame as they coasted to a 75-43 win.

Five Skyhawks scored in double figures led by Astrea Reed’s 13 points. Ande Lampert had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lampert led a dominant performance by a FLC front line that outrebounded the opponents 47-30 and won the second-chance points battle 23-6.

“Second chance points and rebounds are two stats that tell the story,” Fort Lewis head coach Jason Flores said. “Those are energy and effort stats, and it doesn’t surprise me to see it because the effort (Friday night) was great.”

The Mountaineers (4-16, 2-16 RMAC) were never allowed an opportunity to breathe, as the Skyhawks’ defense smothered them from the start. Western State began the game 3-for-15 from the field, and Fort Lewis capitalized at the other end with an 18-4 run to start.

The Fort Lewis bench was effective early and often as it has for much of the season. The superb Skyhawks’ reserves outscored the opponents 19-4 in the first half which led to a 40-20 halftime advantage for FLC. The Skyhawks bench bested its counterparts 44-15 for the duration.

“It’s a bummer to have been without (Mary Rambo), but we’re all trying to make up for her loss,” Lampert said of her senior teammate, who is still out with lingering concussion symptoms. “We’re just trying to split up the responsibilities and fill in as best we can.”

The interior group of Lampert, Victoria Trowbridge and Alyssa Yocky combined for 24 points and 22 rebounds.

The second half began with more solid defense from the home team as the Mountaineers were held scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Skyhawks amassed a 26-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and cruised to a win.

Harlie Williams and Taylor Mayes led the Mountaineers with eight points as none of the Mountaineers cracked double figures.

Fort Lewis will play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against CSU-Pueblo at Whalen Gymnasium. The Skyhawks will need another hot start as the ThunderWolves are tied at the top of the RMAC.
