Bayfield boys take down Monte Vista on road

Wolverines win 56-48

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team went on the road Friday night to Monte Vista and returned victorious with 56-48 win.

“This was an overall improvement, step by step sometimes,” Bayfield head coach Jeff Lehnus said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “This was a culmination of a well rounded game. We’re doing better job of handling ball even though we had 12 turnovers, I’d like fewer, but that’s progress.”

Taed Heydinger led Bayfield with 17 points and Ryan Phelps added 16, as Bayfield (9-9, 3-4 3A Intermountain League) shot 48 percent from the field. Bayfield also outrebounded Monte Vista (6-13, 2-6), 35-22, and shot 13-for-22 from the free-throw line.

“We want to attack but also have patience. We have a better grasp of how we want to go about it,” Lehnus said. “Defense continues to be fairly strong.”

The Bayfield girls didn’t fare was well as the boys did, as the ladies lost 56-44.

Bayfield will be on the road again Saturday. The girls begin play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys are at 7 p.m. at Pagosa Springs High School.
