Durango boys blow out Montrose on Senior Night

Durango wins 58-45

It didn’t take long for the Durango High School boys basketball team to take control in front of a packed house at Durango High School on senior night as the Demons welcomed the Montrose Indians.

The Demons ran past the Indians with ease, winning 58-45.

Senior Orion Clay led all scorers with 15 points and added five rebounds, and all the seniors from Durango scored. Terrence Trujillo had seven points, Lucas Baken had six, Scott Morse had six, Seth Gilleland had four, Guy Bay had three and both Christian Gonzalez and Lawrence Mayberry each had two points.

“Our senior night happened to be first rate,” said Clay, son of Amee and Daron Clay. “We were feeling it (Friday night). We were trying to play to everyone’s strength and everyone was giving each other high screens.”

Durango (13-6, 6-3 5A/4A Southwestern League) was tied at 6-6 with Montrose (4-15, 1-7), but soon opened the flood gates and went on a 15-0 run to finish out the first quarter.

The Demons’ first quarter success proved valuable because Montrose outscored the Demons in the second quarter 10-9. The second half, however, proved to be all Demons.

Durango outrebounded Montrose 16-10 and had more assists than Montrose at 7-3. Durango was also lethal from the foul line shooting 8-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Montrose had a hard time keeping up with the Demons.

“I didn’t have to do much because the boys were ready,” Durango head coach Allen Batiste said. “We were talking about this the past few weeks to get out to a good start on this game. It’s good to get that comfortable win and go into postseason play. I think we can compete with anyone in the state, but we have to stay disciplined. We can be dangerous.”

By the end of the third quarter, the Demons had a comfortable 45-24 lead, which could be credited Durango’s transition game, as the Demons forced 11 turnovers.

DHS is back home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Fruita Monument.
