Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio wrestling teams looking to qualify wrestlers for state at regionals

After one day of regional wrestling tournaments, the Bayfield Wolverines still have a chance to send every varsity wrestler to the state tournament, and only an injury could keep the Ignacio Bobcats from saying the same.

Meanwhile, the Durango Demons had one wrestler, Cole Gustavson, advance to the semifinals of the CHSAA 4A Region 3 tournament with a slew of boys still ready to wrestle in consolation rounds.

It was a strong start to the CHSAA 3A Region 4 tournament for Bayfield High School with Cody Speece (120 pounds), Garrett Beebe (126), Taylor Winch (138), Ryan Nava (145), Macoy Michaeli (160) and Sam Westbrook (285) all reaching the semifinals that will be wrestled Saturday morning in Montrose.

Ignacio had Tyler Beebe (132), Ethan Appenzeller (138) and Lorenzo Peña (160) all advance to the semifinals of the Class 2A Region 1 tournament in Grand Junction.

Gustavson (160) was Durango’s lone quarterfinal winner, but Devon Pound, Paul Smogacz, Jordan Belt, Tyrell Thorsheim, Kaleb McMunn, Tristan Martinez, Nick Vasquez, Austin Counts and Joseph Gillen are alive in the consolation bracket.

Durango is in 11th place out of 12 teams with only 14 team points.

Ignacio stands in seventh place in team points with 32, while that regional is being led by Hotchkiss’ 96 points, followed closely by Paonia with 93.

Ignacio has Dalton Mickey and Timothy Plehinger alive in the consolation bracket.

For Bayfield, Colby Baker, Chris Kane, Cash Snooks and Wyatt Freier are all alive in the consolation bracket and will play a big role if the Wolverines climb from third place to become regional champions. The Wolverines held an early lead after two rounds Friday, but their 60.5 points have fallen behind Delta’s 87.5 and Moffat County with 72. Olathe is right behind Bayfield with 59.5 points.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each region will qualify for the state tournament to be held next weekend at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
