Support our economy, Public Lands Day

I was distressed to see that a committee of the Colorado Legislature in Denver delayed voting on a bill to establish a Public Lands Day. What could be controversial about a Public Lands Day?

We are lucky to live in Durango where we can explore so many spectacular public lands right near home. But these lands also provide for us economically. Because I work day-to-day in the outdoor and active lifestyle markets, I am acutely aware of how important our pristine landscapes are to outdoor business and the overall economic health of La Plata County, our state and country. In fact, the Outdoor Industry Association found that $13.2 billion is spent every year on outdoor recreation in Colorado and provides more than 125,000 direct jobs. Protected public lands provide an advantage for our local businesses to attract not only a customer base for the outdoor industry, but also to recruit the highest quality talent for all our industries. Public lands are good for all businesses.

I urge our elected officials to support our local economy and lifestyle by voting yes to establish a Public Lands Day in Colorado.
