Ignacio girls basketball gets convincing win over Nucla

Bobcats win 69-40

The Ignacio High School girls basketball team welcomed the Nucla Mustangs to its home floor and won in a physical game.

Ignacio’s Hilda Garcia poured in a career-high 28 points to lead the Bobcats to a 69-40 win. Garcia also had eight assists.

After the end of the first half, Ignacio (14-3, 10-0 2A/1A San Juan League) was up 30-18, but a 24-4 third quarter put the game out of reach as Ignacio hit on all cylinders to beat Nucla (12-5, 5-4).

“Everyone contributed, it was a good win for us,” Ignacio head coach Shane Seibel said. “We came out defensively and shut them down. We played a heck of a game with good competition. We were able to come out after halftime and went on a big run. This was a great team win going into the league championship. The girls are really excited knowing they can play a physical team. It was good for us to have a good hard fought battle and come away with the win.”

The entire Bobcat roster scored on Saturday night. Avionne Gomez finished with 15 points, and Ellie Seibel had six points and seven rebounds. Chrystianne Valdez scored all of her eight points in the third quarter and also finished with six steals.

“We were able to hang our hat on our defense,” coach Seibel said.

Ignacio will play for the 2A/1A San Juan League championship when it travels to Norwood (16-1, 9-0) at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
