Bayfield High School wrapped up the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Region 4 wrestling tournament with a fifth-place team finish with four boys earning a trip to next weekend’s CHSAA state tournament in Denver.

Ryan Nava was crowned the 145-pound regional champion with an 8-7 decision win over Alex Cordova of Rifle. Taylor Winch took second place at 138 pounds after being pinned by Delta’s Shaun Staats in the championship match, but Winch will get to try again next weekend.

Heavyweight Sam Westbrook lost by one point in his semifinal match but rebounded to take third place to qualify for state after a 3-1 decision win against Victor Perez of Montezma-Cortez.

Also qualifying was Tyler Beebe at 126 pounds, as an earlier win against Colten Crawford of Steamboat Springs solidified his place after a loss in the third-place match.

BHS was in third place of the team standings after one day but fell to fifth Saturday. Olathe won with 203.5 points, with Delta a close second with 198. Bayfield finished with 128.

“The semifinals were rough. We had six in, and the four matches we lost came down to one point,” said BHS head coach Neil Barnes. “It kind of spiraled downhill from there. But I’m proud of the boys. They all battled and fought hard, and I couldn’t ask for more. They have made my first year as head coach memorable.”

Cody Speece placed fifth at regionals at 120 pounds, while Cash Snooks and Wyatt Freier each took sixth place at 170 and 195 pounds, respectively.

“It was a good learning experience, and every guy who lost a semifinal will be back with us next year,” Barnes said. “It bodes well for us knowing we will have a talented and tough team coming back.”
