Los Lonely Boys highlight month at the Fort

March at the Fort is filled with guest artists and student art.

The Art Gallery hosts Lara Stein Pardo, artist and cultural anthropologist and visiting assistant professor of Anthropology at U.C. Boulder, as juror for the 55th annual Student Juried Exhibition which opened Wednesday and continues through March 28.

Dr. Joren Cain, associate professor of saxophone and director of the New Jazz Ensemble at Valdosta State University (Georgia) performs a free recital in Roshong the 15th. Lisa Campi Walters, piano, will accompany Joren; and Brent Williams, violin, joins them for Adolf Busch’s Suite for Violin and Saxophone. Cain is committed to the study and performance of contemporary saxophone music and has commissioned over a dozen new works for the instrument. His playing has been applauded by such diverse composers as Sammy Nestico, Alfred Reed and Jindrich Feld.

The Artists in Residence series continues the 19th and 20th with “Occident Meets Orient”; Carole Fitzpatrick, soprano; Robert Barefield, baritone; Russell Ryan, piano. This performance explores societal attitudes and misconceptions about life in Eastern cultures through Western classical and popular music of the 19th and 20th centuries. Fascinated by the East, composers of traditional Western romanticism, operetta, musical theater and popular dance-inspired tunes participated in a project we now call “Orientalism”: the construction of a mythic Eastern stereotype through music, visual art, poetry and other cultural texts. They’ll give a free master class at 4 p.m. March 19 and a recital (pay at the door $5 to $15) at 3 p.m. on the 20th.

Inspired by Georges Bizet’s popular score, State Street Ballet offers a full-length production of “Carmen” on the 19th. Exquisite choreography, intricate storytelling and Bizet’s passionate, immortal music make Carmen a show unlike any other.

An evening with award-winning virtuoso guitarist Bruce Cockburn heads our way the 24th. For Cockburn, music has always been a key to exploring culture, politics and the nature of the spirit. His journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, blues, rock and the world beat styles.

Rounding out March on the 30th is Los Lonely Boys with special guest Levi Platero Band. Readily recognized for the No. 1 chart-topper “Heaven,” Los Lonely Boys is an Austin-based, Grammy Award-winning group of brothers – Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza. The band is noted for a unique style of music that combines elements of blues, soul, country and Tejano, which the brothers have dubbed as Texican rock ’n’ roll. The band’s most recent release – “Revelation” – is considered a landmark release for the siblings, combining the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock ’n’ roll and rootsy brown-eyed soul with an expansive range of sonic elements.
