Two Durango restaurants undergo changes, another closes

Guido’s remodels, Main Event to be replaced and 6512 is closed

After a few Durango restaurants recently went out of business, the closure of Guido’s Favorite Foods and Main Event Sports Bar & Grill raised some serious concerns among food lovers.

But owners at Guido’s said the Italian eatery is simply remodeling. Main Event is going away, and the location will open anew as Plate, under the same ownership.

Co-owner Amber Jacin said Guido’s closed Sunday with the hopes of reopening with a new look some time mid-next week at its location at 12th Street and Main Avenue, depending on construction timelines.

“We’re basically kicking things up a notch,” Jacin said. “We’ve had the same look for 15 years, and it was just time to change and make it more sleek, inviting and contemporary.”

Jacin said the renovations will better streamline the market, deli and restaurant experience. The Italian food eatery also will add an authentic pizza oven and change its name to Guido’s Pizza Pasta Panini.

At Main Event on East Animas Road (County Road 250), the changes are a bit more substantial, said co-owner Jeff Tipton. The sports bar is history, and the owners will reopen a new restaurant called Plate.

“It’s going to be a better dining experience,” said Tipton. “Not high end, but steaks and shrimp and lamb. It’s going to be really good food.”

Tipton said his entire space at the intersection of East Animas Road and Florida Road (County Road 240) will be remodeled. Main Event opened in April 2014 and closed Feb. 8. Tipton said the new restaurant is expected to open by April 1.

The recent closures include the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, which closed in late September after 11 years in business, and the Steaming Bean Coffee Co., which will close on Friday after 23 years in business. Both establishments were on Main Avenue.

Also, 6512 Restaurant, 156 East College Drive., closed Feb. 11 “due to sale,” according to its website, which says “stay tuned for new ownership.”

Its owners could not be reached Thursday for comment.
