Ellie Carpenter, Jam Vertner pace Fort Lewis lacrossr past Rockhurst

Skyhawks pick up their first RMAC win

Ellie Carpenter keeps pouring in goals, and the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team is playing well on all ends of the field.

The Skyhawks (3-1, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) picked up their first conference win of the season Tuesday in Kansas City against Rockhurst. After an early Jam Vertner goal, Carpenter poured in two of her three goals in a 7-minute stretch in the middle of the first half to give FLC an early 3-0 lead.

Fort Lewis built a 7-0 advantage by halftime and cruised to an 11-3 victory.

Carpenter scored three goals in all, bringing her season total to 14. She has scored at least two goals in every match this season. Vertner also had a hat trick with three goals to bring her season total to seven.

Also scoring for FLC was Ryann Pierce, who had two, Nikki Fry, Taylor Cabrera and Kelli Warmouth.

Marissa DiCecco led the Skyhawks with two assists. Brooke Galle added another assist, as did Rebecca Miller.

FLC dominated the match with 25 shots to 14 for Rockhurst. FLC also was extremely accurate with its shorts, putting 21 on goal.

Fry led the Skyhawks with four groundballs, and Katlyne Duffy scooped up three. The Skyhawks used a pair of goalies Tuesday, with Alyssa Spencer earning the win while making three saves. She allowed one goal. Ally Guerrero stepped in net for the game’s final 12 minutes and made three saves and allowed two goals.

Kathy Perkins made 10 saves in goal for Rockhurst.

Next up for the Skyhawks is a match against Lock Haven at noon Friday in Denver. FLC’s first home game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, against Oklahoma Baptist.

The Skyhawks received votes in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. RMAC foe Lindenwood remained at No. 3. Adelphia is in first with 20 first-place votes and a 2-0 record.

Friday’s opponenet for FLC, Lock Haven, is currently ranked No. 8, so a win could propel FLC into the top 25 next week.
